Globally, 1 in 5 girls around the world are married before the age of 18. That’s 23 girls every minute. In the next 20 minutes, nearly 500 girls will be married.

With the economic downturn, school closures, and limited access to services due to COVID-19, experts have predicted an additional 13 million child marriages over the next 10 years—the largest increase since 1995.

Married girls face severe consequences—they’re more likely to never finish their education, face food insecurity, and experience other forms of violence throughout their lives. 90% of adolescent pregnancies in the developing world occur within marriage, and sadly, complications from pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death for adolescent girls.
